In 1601-1610, it was one of the last major houses built by the celebrated Elizabethan architect, Sir Robert Smythson. Symmetrical in red brick with stone dressings, but with later sashes, the interiors similarly combine Elizabethan work with 18th century alterations.The picture collection includes impressionist and 20th century works as well as earlier portraits.Features: The hall is surrounded by lawns with topiary yew. The Old Walled garden now contains a maze, potager and campanula collection. 2005 HHA/Christie’s Garden of the Year Award winner.
