Avebury stone circle is one of the most spectacular prehistoric monuments in Britain and is rightly designated as a World Heritage Site. One of the largest stone circles in Europe, it surrounds the picturesque village that shares the monuments name.
Measuring 427m in diameter, Avebury covers an area of 28 acres. The bank and exterior ditch form non circular ring running for nearly a mile that originally contained a great ring made of 98 sarsen stones. Within this were two smaller rings of 30 or so stones. Today only 27 of the giant stones remain (many were used in construction of Avebury village). Originally there were two avenues connected to Avebury; of which only the West Kennet Avenue survives, connecting the circle to the sanctuary on Silbury Hill.
