Derived from Tudor monastic origins, gradually enlarged, culminating in the French-style addition of 1695 which lead to Boughton House gaining the sobriquet ‘The English Versailles’. Outstanding fine art treasures include a collection of tapestries in interiors which provide an excellent example of late Stuart taste. Paintings by El Greco, Murillo, Caracci and over 40 Van Dyck grisaillies.
