The unfinished castle of Beaumaris was one of Edward 1's string of fortifications built in Wales after his successful campaigns against the Welsh princes. Construction began in 1295 and continued for the next 35 years. The castles architect, James of St. George, was considered the foremost castle builder of his day and was bought in specially from Savoy for Edwards building campaign. The symmetrical design and grand water defences make it an excellent example of 13th century military architecture.
