Founded on Christmas Day 1067 by Roger de Montgomery, who was granted the earldom of Arundel by William the Conqueror, Arundel castle remains as a restored medieval castle. The castle has served as the home for the Duke of Norfolk and his family for over 800 years, a role it fulfils to this day.
Built soon after the Norman invasion Arundel was vital in the implementation of William the Conquerors rule on the subject Saxon people, whilst also defending against further invasion from the continent. The castle has been rebuilt in several incarnations and was heavily damaged during the English civil war, before being restored to the castle we see today in the 18th and 19th centuries.
